Nokia Asha 502 and 503 specs leaked

From the same Chinese Nokia shop TMall that confirmed the Lumia 1520 specs and pricing for us over the weekend, now comes the listing for Asha 502, a new affordable phone from Nokia that is likely to be announced tomorrow.

The leaked post confirms a 3.2" display and the same 5 MP camera found on the leaked Asha 503, so we'd wager to guess the 502 would mimic the rest of the 503, save perhaps for the 3G connectivity. The specs for the Asha 503 are said to be 3.2" touchscreen with 240 x 320 pixels resolution, 5 MP camera with LED flash, microSD card slot and a 1200 mAh battery.

It will be the best connected Asha of them all, with 3G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 3.0 radios, plus a dual SIM version. Moreover, the Asha 503 and 502 fit in 102.55 mm x 60.55 x 11.5 mm bodies with about112g of weight, and feature this funky dual-shot body design we already showed you. The Nokia Asha 502 is supposed to come in 6 candy colors - black, white, yellow, red, green, and blue - so we'd assume the same for the Asha 503, too. The handsets are supposed to come for about $110 and below, which would be pretty decent for the best-equipped Ashas out there.

Moreover, the Asha 5xx range, which will remain with Nokia after Microsoft acquires the smartphone business, is apparently getting hit titles like Plants vs Zombies and Whatsapp, so all is well with the world.

Nokia Asha 503 leaks in an official photo

The notorious evleaks leakster has given the world yet again another glimpse of an official picture that wasn't meant to go public just yet. This time the pictured device is Nokia Asha 503 - an upcoming member of the Nokia featurephone lineup.
The dual-SIM Nokia Asha 501 has been on the market for quite some time, while its single-SIM sibling - the Asha 500 - is still in Rumorland. Recently we even got to see the dual-SIM Asha 502 with a LED flash on its back and slightly different shell compared to the Asha 500/501 duet.
Now evleaks has given us the single-SIM version of the Asha 502 - the Nokia Asha 503. It looks exactly like the 502 model, is Wi-Fi enabled and has a LED flash next to its camera at the back.
All these Asha phones are expected to go official on October 22 at Nokia World in Abu Dhabi. Nokia is expected to unveil six new devices there - the Lumia 1520 phablet, the Lumia 2520 Windows RT slate, plus a bunch of Asha phones.

The Samsung Galaxy Gear can run full Android apps

The Samsung Galaxy Gear has had a rocky reaction from users and tech reviewers as a consumer device, but it looks like the Gear could have a pretty impressive second life as a hacker's device. While you may not see it with the custom UI, the Gear is actually running full Android 4.2.2 albeit on pretty low-powered hardware. Still, it seems like with just a little bit of work, you can sideload full Android apps onto the device.

Obviously, there are limitations to what the Gear can do since it is has just a 1.6-inch screen, 800MHz processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of storage, and no native data connection. But, it looks like it is very easy to turn on USB debugging, which will then allow you to use ADB to sideload apps on the device. Ron Amadeo over at Ars Technica was able to get apps running, play a game of Candy Crush, listen to music with the device's built-in speakers, and even watch some video. 

None of these things are really ideal functions of the device, but this is really just about the potential of the Gear. The device hasn't yet been rooted, but that seems to be on the way, and after that there could be some pretty interesting things happening with the Gear.

LG flexible OLED smartphone display

LG's curved display production plans are coming along nicely, as the company has officially announced today that its first flexible OLED panel for smartphones has entered mass production. The company expects a rapid success of the flexible smartphone displays saying that other products are also going to benefit from the new technology. Such candidates include tablets, automotive displays and wearable devices.
The flexible OLED display in question is 0.44mm thin making it the slimmest among existing mobile device panels, according to LG. Furthermore, the display itself is built using plastic substrates instead of glass. This makes it virtually unbreakable, while remaining quite bendable.
We're yet to see the company announce any smartphones with said flexible OLED display. There are rumors that Korean giants Samsung and LG will unveil curved OLED smartphones in October, but nothing has been confirmed yet.
LG's device has been rumored to debut the company's Z series and the company appears to be in a furious race with Samsung to unveil such a smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy J for Japanese market leaks out

The Sony Xperia Z1 mini isn’t the only drool-worthy, Japan-only smartphone we ran into today. Samsung Galaxy J is yet another top-shelf Android handset bound for NTT DoCoMo as part of the carrier’s winter lineup. The alleged specs of the Samsung Galaxy J are a mixture of Galaxy S4 and Note 3 internals. The handset reportedly features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC, 3GB of RAM, and 5” 1080p display. The Galaxy J will be available in three different color schemes Coral Pink, Satin White, and Lapis Blue.
The Samsung Galaxy J is more than likely to make an official appearance on October 10.

Asus may not build the next Nexus 7

Earlier this week, a report hit DigiTimes talking about how Asus is working on a number of new tablets that it is planning to bring to market, but the real question is why. Obviously, some companies (Samsung comes to mind) think that more is always better, but companies with more limited resources like Asus usually have to be careful about where it puts its efforts.

Industry insiders are saying that in addition to the current tablets that Asus has on the market - the MeMO Pad HD 7, the Nexus 7 (2013), the Fonepad 7, the new PadFone Infinity, and the Transformer Pad - the company is also working on the MeMo Pad HD 8, the MeMOFone HD 5, the FonePad Note FHD 6, and the PadFone mini, which could hit the market soon. 

That is a lot of devices, especially since the company's most popular device is the Google-branded Nexus 7. But, the thinking is that Asus is trying to diversify and find more users outside of the Nexus because the company may not be making the next generation Nexus 7 that will likely come out next summer. Of course, there have been consistent rumors that Asus is taking over the Nexus 10 reins from Samsung, but the 10 is not nearly as popular as the 7.

Microsoft gets supply right: Surface 2 pre-orders

We have no idea how many Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 tablets Microsoft had produced for pre-orders, so it's hard to say how impressed we should be with this news, but it is good to see that Microsoft got its supply numbers right this time around. One of the biggest stories regarding Microsoft from this past year was how the company supremely overestimated the demand for the original Surface RT tablet. The company ended up with $900 million in unsold devices, and that is considered a reason why Steve Ballmer has announced his retirement. 

This time around, Microsoft and Ballmer have gotten it right, it seems. Microsoft has announced that Surface 2 pre-orders have begun selling out. According to Surface General Manager Brian Hall, the pre-order stock of the 64GB model of the Surface 2 and the 256GB and 512GB models of the Surface Pro 2 are "close to selling out" after being up for pre-order for just about one week. 

The blog post goes on to say that there will be "limited availability" of Surface 2 and Pro 2 tablets, so Microsoft is recommending pre-orders. Of course, Microsoft is likely keeping availability limited to ensure it doesn't end up with more unsold stock on hand. The Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 tablets will be hitting stores on October 22nd.
