Samsung Galaxy S4 selling far better than expected

Samsung Mobile chief JK Shin has smashed the rumors of poor Galaxy S4 sales by revealing the actual sales figures for the flagship. Speaking to Korean media, Shin said more than 40 million Samsung Galaxy S4 phones have been sold.

This puts the rumors of the phone's disappointing sales to rest. It was them in particular which suggested the company is hard at work on announcing the next-gen Galaxy S5 early in 2014. Now that seems far less likely to happen.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 reached 10 million sales just one month after its release and double that in the next month. It appear though, that the smartphone's sales campaign hasn't ran out of steam after that as some previous reports suggested.
JK Shin has also said that the company is working with different battery suppliers in order to solve isolated cases of batteries overheating and swelling issues.

Apple iPad mini 2 and iPad Air go official

The wraps are off, the new Apple tablets are official. Say hello to the new 9.7" model, iPad Air (not 5), and the new 7.9" model, the iPad mini 2. The big news, of course, is that the mini model now has a Retina display.

Apple iPad mini 2

The Apple iPad mini 2 still has a 7.9" screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio, but the resolution has quadrupled to 1536 x 2048 pixels and the pixel density has doubled to 324ppi.
The chipset was another part where the iPad mini lagged behind with a lowly dual-core Cortex-A9 processor. Apple has used its own Apple A7 chipset with ARMv8-based Cyclone cores, a couple of generations ahead of A9. The GPU got a major boost too and is a PowerVR SGX 6th series. The M7 motion co-processor is on-board too.

The TouchID rumors didn’t pan out and the mini 2 has a regular Home button. Another disappointment is that it's 0.3mm thicker (7.5mm) and 23g heavier (331g).
The Apple iPad mini 2 runs iOS 7 out of the box (of course) and storage options range from 16GB all the way to 128GB. Color options are just Silver & White and Space Grey & Black. As usual there will be Wi-Fi and 3G/LTE versions.
The Apple iPad mini 2 will be available in November starting at $399, which is notably higher compared to the $339 starting price of the first iPad mini last year.
Surprisingly, the original iPad mini will be kept alive at $299.

Apple iPad Air

The Apple iPad Air brings a new name, new design and more power. It received the new Apple A7 chipset along with the M7 motion co-processor. The other major upgrade is the design – it's based on the iPad mini and has narrower bezels (43% smaller) that make the tablet easier to handle.
The tablet is 20% thinner and now measures just 7.5mm, thinner than the iPad 2. The weight also went down big time - from 653g to 469g.
Other than that you get a 9.7" IPS LCD screen with 1536 x 2048 pixel as before. The iPad Air didn't get the TouchID sensor either, but we doubt anyone will miss it.
Color options are Silver and white and Space gray and the storage options go all the way up to 128GB (starting at 16GB and doubling at each step).
The Apple iPad Air will be available on November 1 starting at $499.
By the way, the iPad 2 is still alive and will continue selling at $399 (it's three generations old now).

Smart Cover

Apple also unveiled a new type of case for the iPads, the Smart Cover. It's similar to the iPhone 5s cases as it covers the back and comes in a variety of colors.  For the iPad Air, the Smart Cases cost $79, while the iPad mini 2 Smart Cases cost $69. The cases are made of leather and com in come in Brown, Beige, Black, Yellow, Blue and PRODUCT (RED).

Snapdragon 800 Samsung Galaxy S4 hits Europe

Europeans don't need to envy SK Telecom users any more – the Snapdragon 800-powered Samsung I9506 Galaxy S4 with LTE+ (a.k.a. LTE-Advanced) has arrived on the Old Continent (with no fuss or fanfare - just a single press release for Sweden).

There's no pricing info available, in fact no store in Europe has yet officially announced that it will carry the upgraded device but it showed up on the official Samsung Germany website. The specs page lists the 2.3GHz quad-core chipset and Cat 4 LTE and everything. The rest of the specs are unchanged.
As for color options, only the White Frost / Black Mist are listed with a note saying there might be more color options available depending on the market. The older I9500 / I9505 duo has the following additional colors: Aurora Red (AT&T only), Arctic Blue, Purple Mirage, Brown Autumn, Pink Twilight.
We did find it on international etailer Overseas Electronics for a hefty $950 price tag (the old version is under $600).
By the way, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active is also rumored to be getting a Snapdragon 800 refresh, but there's nothing official about that yet.

Nokia Lumia 1520 leaks again, accessories in tow

A couple of leaked images delivered by evleaks have shown a few of tomorrow's Nokia announcements including the Lumia 1520 phablet. The handset is joined by a couple of accessories - the Treasure Tag key finder and the Nokia Guru music player.
The first leak shows the Nokia Lumia 1520 from a new angle, that lets us get a better idea of the slim profile of the device. Judging from the photo, it's going to be as thin, if not thinner, than the Lumia 1020 cameraphone. Unconfirmed information states the Lumia 1520 will likely feature a 6" display, 20 MP camera and 3,390 mAh battery.
The Nokia Lumia 1520 will feature a potent quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor and FullHD 1080p display, who gained support for WP8 a couple of days ago with the GDR 3 update. The Nokia Glance Background will also be on board.
As far as the accessories go, the Nokia Treasure Tag is a little keychain device which resembles the HTC Fetch you might have seen. Basically, you hook it to your keys and then use the phone to make it ring and locate them when needed.
It seems that the Treasure Tag is working via Bluetooth and features a single button on the top side. The leaked photo reveals the yellow version, but we suspect Nokia will also have it in other colors. There’s also a specially designed Treasure Tag app for Windows Phone 8 to go along with the accessory.
The second leaked photo shows what looks like a music player device called Nokia Guru. The notable leakster also posted a product photo to go along with his tweet.

It’s not clear whether this name is the final one or if it’s a codename, but the Guru looks quite small. As you can see from the photo above it’s a bit larger than the pair of headphones. As the leaked photo shows, the Guru will connect to a computer via microUSB port and there’s a volume rocker on its right side. The 3.5mm headphone jack is alongside the microUSB port on the bottom.
The Nokia Guru will probably also be offered in multiple color schemes, but that’s mostly a speculation at this point. Here’s hoping Nokia won’t charge an arm and a leg for it.
The Nokia Lumia 1520 and the two accessories are expected to debut tomorrow at the Nokia event in Abu Dabi. We’ll be covering the action live, so stay tuned for an in-depth look at what the Finns have in store.
